The release of The Last Of Us Part 1 is just around the corner, with the game releasing early next month. And before the launch of the game, Naughty Dog shared details about the game’s accessibility features of the game.
PlayStation’s blog provided a detailed list of the accessibility features fans can expect after release. According to Naughty Dog, the accessibility options present in The Last Of Us Part 2 were used as the baseline for the remake. And then further improved upon to ensure as many players can enjoy the game as possible.
Players that are disabled in terms of vision and hearing are the focus of the options in The Last Of Us Part 1. The game director Matthew Gallant says that people will such disabilities will be able to fully enjoy the game, citing the audio description of the cinematics as the biggest new addition. The company partnered with Descriptive Video Works, a professional service that has worked in TV, movies, and video game trailers in the past, to integrate audio descriptions into cutscenes across all languages.
In-game dialogues will also play through the DualSense controller as haptic feedback. Allowing players will hearing problems to feel the characters speaking. This will add a layer of immersion along with the subtitles.
Many of these accessibility options were built to function together and complement each other. And so, accessibility presets are present in the game pre-configured to different disabilities.
The vision preset adds a screen reader, cutscene descriptions, easily visible HUG, auto-targeting / lock-on aim, extra audio cues for traversal and combat, as well as navigation assistance and the option to skip puzzles.
The hearing preset in The Last Of Us Part 1 adds awareness indicators, visual cues when picking items, detailed subtitles for the story and combat, subtitle names, and vibration cues for combat.
Lastly, the motor accessibility preset adds auto-targeting, automatic weapon switching, auto-pickup items, camera assist, infinite breath, repeated button presses, and eliminating weapon sway.
